Public Transport Options in Northern Cyprus

Northern Cyprus is an island country where people come from all over the world, not only from Turkey, but also from all over the world, for a holiday or life, due to the peaceful and pleasant life opportunities it offers in all four seasons. In this beautiful country, there is a density of people who come especially during the summer months.

However, due to transportation opportunities, it is not possible to feel this density in traffic most of the time. Transportation in Cyprus is provided by alternative options such as public transportation, taxi and car rental. If we look briefly at the transportation options in Cyprus;

Transportation by Private Buses in and Out of the City

Cities in Northern Cyprus are not very far from one. For this reason, you can get to the desired place in a short time. Most of the public transportation services in and out of the city are carried out by private companies. These companies; Grass, Akva, Kombos and Itimat.
The main routes of these buses are Girne, Famagusta and Nicosia. There are bus services from Nicosia city center to all parts of the country. Although the buses do not have a fixed schedule, it is possible to get on from any point on the main road. Buses depart at the beginning of the hour in winter, and depart from their main stops in an average of 10 to 20 minutes in summer.

The daytime hours of private buses in Northern Cyprus are between 05:00 and 21:00. At night, they work between 21:00 and 04:00. Although there is a subscription card for paying fares on buses, as in Turkey, tickets can also be obtained from bus drivers. Pricing is made according to the distance between the starting point and the destination point.

 There is a difference between adults and students on bus tickets. A certain amount of discount is applied to subscribers and students in ticket prices.

There are special shuttles departing from Nicosia, Famagusta and Girne city bus stations to Ercan Airport at certain times.

Nicosia-Girne, Nicosia-Guzelyurt and Nicosia-Famagusta bus lines can be used to visit popular beaches and historical places in Northern Cyprus. The main departure point of these buses is Nicosia bus terminal.

Transportation in and out of the city by minibus

In addition to buses for travel in Northern Cyprus, another alternative is minibuses. It is possible to go to all settlements of Northern Cyprus by minibuses departing at certain hour intervals. There are also adult and student tickets for minibuses. It is possible to travel between cities such as Nicosia – Kyrenia or Nicosia – Famagusta by minibuses, as well as in-city transportation.

Transportation by Taxis

Taxis are also available in Cyprus. All taxis are state-of-the-art luxury vehicles. Taxis are used for transportation within the city. There is a standard opening price. Taxi drivers have to turn on the meter as soon as their customers board.

Transportation with Car Rental

Another transportation alternative in Cyprus is car rental. You can use car rental services from Ercan Airport or in city centers such as Nicosia, Kyrenia or Famagusta. You can use your current Turkish driver's license within the first month of your arrival to the island. However, some conditions are sought for car rental. In addition to being at least 25 years old, a minimum 3-year driver's license is mandatory for rental. You can choose the make and model of the vehicle you will rent, most of which are in the luxury segment.

Long-term visitors often prefer the car rental method. This method is often used, especially in the summer months, when the cost of car rental and gasoline are affordable. However, driving licenses valid in Turkey are not valid if you will stay in Northern Cyprus for more than 1 month. If you are going to drive during your long stays, you need to bring your driver's license to the standards required in Cyprus.
