INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

International Women's day is a special day celebrated on 8 March every year and defined by the United Nations. This important day is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in all areas of life, such as economics, politics, and sociology. Unfortunately, acceptance of this important day has not been easy and fast in any country. Let's examine the date of this special and important day.

The History Of March 8 International Woman's Day

In August 1910, in Copenhagen of Denmark collected at the International Conference on Socialist Women, affiliated with the second (Socialist) International, the delegates of the Social Democratic Party of Germany Clara Zetkin, Kate Duncker, Rosa Luxemburg, and friends his friends henceforth brought a proposal to organize a "women's day" every year.

The proposal was unanimously adopted, and although no specific date was set in the early years, women's day was celebrated every year. At the Congress of Communist women associated with the third International Congress held in Moscow in 1921, “World working women's day” was adopted as the name due to the influence of the policy of “class against Class” adopted at that time. But considering that this day should reflect much better women who are an undisputed part of the whole world, in 1930, along with the political effects of the period, it was decided to call it “International Women's Day” again.

Different events are shown as the reason why International Women's day is celebrated on March 8. The February March 8 Revolution of 1917, which led to the fall of Tsardom in Russia, is one of them. Another is based on the March 8, 1857, incident in New York, USA, in which female workers who were acting to seek their rights were closed to the factory by police, and 120 female workers who were trapped in the factory were killed by fire as a result of the bitter incident.

Unfortunately, this important day was forbidden to be commemorated in some countries that were afraid of the spread of socialism, especially during the first and Second World War years. Nevertheless, The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in the International Women's Year, 1975. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace.

8 March Women's Day In Turkey

International Women's day in Turkey was first held in 1921 at the initiative of two communist sisters, Rahime Selimova and Cemile Nushirvanova. After this date, unfortunately, for many years, 8 March was not allowed to celebrate International Women's day. However, in 1975 it was declared the" United Nations Women's decade". Because Turkey also took part in this context, the "women's year Congress" was held in Turkey in 1975. In the following years, 8 March International Women's Day celebrations became more regular and moved from indoor to outdoor and large areas.

The contribution of Ataturk's principles to ensuring equal opportunities for women and men in education, business life, and Politics to women deprived of social life is great. Ataturk, while women are not yet given the right to choose and be selected in most of the world, has included them in social life by offering women this chance in Turkey. 5 December 1934 adopted by the law women gained the right to choose and be elected, and since then every 5 December is celebrated as World Women's Rights Day.
