Turkish Citizenship Regulation Guide Updated

The guide for the implementation of the Turkish citizenship law has been updated. The government announced the new changes with a new circular that will be effective as of January 1, 2023. According to the new regulations;

• Citizenship application will no longer be made with common ownership. According to the new circular, if the foreign applicant shares his/her property rights on the title deed with another real or legal person, he/she cannot apply for Turkish citizenship with the said real estate. The deed must be in the name of a single person.

• There is no restriction on the number of real estate to be purchased or the type of real estate. Foreigners; can apply to the Turkish citizenship program with one or more of the real estate options such as residence, workplace, land or farm with a total sales price of at least 400,000 USD. According to the old guideline, more than one promise-to-sell contract was accepted for properties that met the minimum sales amount. However, with the amendment made in the law, the minimum purchase amount must now be concluded with a single sales promise contract. It is not possible to apply for Turkish citizenship with more than one sales promise contract. However, in cases where a real estate registered in the name of more than one person is sold to a foreign buyer, it is possible to apply for citizenship with this property, since all property rights of the said real estate will be transferred to a single person.

• The new guide clearly states that timeshare properties cannot be the subject of Turkish citizenship applications. The new amendment will be effective from 1 January 2023.
